Seven Deadly Sins / Sea to Sea
June 16, 2011
Redshift Music, in collaboration with Montréal's ECM+, presents the double-bill "Seven Deadly Sins / Sea to Sea".
The first half of this concert features flute virtuoso Mark Takeshi McGregor. Over a year in the making, Seven Deadly Sins asks seven Canadian composers to offer their insights into those darkest places of human frailty and failing. The result is a unique programme that is unsettling, seductive and occasionally humourous. Seven Deadly Sins features new works by Dániel Péter Biró (Gluttony), Dorothy Chang (Wrath), James Beckwith Maxwell (Envy), Jocelyn Morlock (Lust), Gregory Lee Newsome (Greed), T. Benton Roark (Sloth) and Owen Underhill (Pride).
The second programme, Sea to Sea, is a special presentation by both Redshift and ECM+, which teams up the Vancouver-based Tempest Flute Ensemble with one of the great titans of Canadian new music, Véronique Lacroix. Lacroix will take the helm of the Tempest Flutes for the very first time, and with guest cellist Mariève Bock will present the western Canadian premieres of "Magister Ludi" by Gordon Fitzell, "Elysium" by Kati Agocs, and "Bosquet" by Christopher Butterfield. Butterfield's massive, psychedelic work boasts a roster of twenty-two flutists, spatially deployed around the audience. For this concert, Tempest Flutes will be joined by outstanding members of the Vancouver flute community.
This is a unique event that combines the new music forces of two major Canadian cultural centres, and a special statement of national fraternity through music.
