Unsilent Night
Co-presented with Cryptic Music

December 19, 2010

English Bay to Robson Square, Vancouver

Programme

Come and join us for Vancouverʼs Tenth Annual Unsilent Night electronic caroling parade. Bring your friends, family, kids, even the dog! Enjoy a relaxed walk through the West End and downtown as we create Unsilent Night on an as-yet unknown number of portable music players!
New Yorker Phil Kline composed Unsilent Night in 1991 as a non-denominational way of celebrating the holiday season. Participants bring portable music players and each is given one of four “parts” that will be played simultaneously. The music is specially created to blend and morph as the participants naturally shift places and walking speeds while their players each contribute their own slightly different playback speed. The resulting sound is beautiful and ethereal.

Unsilent Night has been an annual event in downtown Manhattan for fifteen years with hundreds of participants both young and old. The more people who participate, the better it gets! This year it will be performed in over 23 cities including Oxford and Hong Kong! Read more about this international event, and listen to samples here: www.unsilentnight.com

Our walk will take place on Sunday, December 19. We will meet at the Tree of Lights on English Bay (Beach Ave. @ Bidwell St., near the Inukshuk) at 6:45pm, and starting at 7:00pm walk through the residential streets of Vancouver's West End down to the shopping district on Robson Street, finally gathering to end the piece at the outdoor ice rink in Robson Square. The whole walk takes about 40 minutes. Dress warmly. Some people come equipped with antlers and tinsel! Be creative and have fun.

In previous years participants have been asked to bring only tape players but technology marches on and this year you are invited to bring a tape player, CD player, or MP3 player (with external speakers). CDs and tapes will be handed out at the event. Just let us know you are coming and what format you will be using (CD or Tape) so we know how many recordings to bring for you and your group. Those who wish to use MP3 format should send an email to receive the download link and password. If you don't have a music player you are still welcome to join the procession and just enjoy the music.

If you would like to take part in Unsilent Night, contact Colin or Andrea MacDonald at 604.875.9522 or send an email to me@drelika.com.
