The Oscar-winning songwriters of “Dirty Dancing” will present an interactive live chat where proceeds raised will go to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network in memory of film star Patrick Swayze.

Here are excerpts from an interview with Oscar-winning songwriters John DeNicola and Franke Previte for “Dirty Dancing” and the iconic song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” in 1987.

KRIS: What do you think of the film that continues to resonate so many years later? What about music that touches a universal human chord?

PF:“I think it’s a combination of a lot of things coming together, stars lining up. You know with the right time Patrick Swayze and (star actress) Jennifer (Gray). And the good little story, then the song, then tie it to ’60s star (singer) Bill Medley and Jennifer Warren.

“So there were a lot of connecting factors. I think the time of innocence he portrays has a lot to do with it and it’s just related.”

KRIS: Tell me about this new take on “Hungry Eyes” and how it focuses on social distancing protocols.

John DeNicola, Oscar-winning songwriter: “I paid tribute to him with an acoustic guitar and a vocals and French horn. We asked all of my friends, family and healthcare workers to take their iPhones and turn it on its side and film themselves with their face masks on for five seconds, we put it all together. And what stands out is the human connection and the subtlety of the subtle message of wearing a mask. ”

KRIS: You will chat and interact live on December 18 at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $ 100. What is this event and how important is it?

PF: “We would like people to come to this master class and how they can get there is rockcamp.com/masterclass. You can actually talk to us. You know it will be a Zoom masterclass where if you have a question – someone has a question about Dirty Dancing – wants to talk to Lisa Swayze, John and I, that’s what it’s all about.

“I think this will be very interesting for fans of Dirty Dancing and even if people are interested in songwriting John will break it down. It lasts about an hour and all that money goes to the Counter Action Network. pancreatic cancer. It’s a crazy disease that took our friend and we’re trying to do everything we can to help people. ”
